WEEKLY PRINCIPAL UPDATES
Weekly Update #13
November 6, 2011
Hi La Cumbre Comminity,
Did you set your clocks back one hour? Daylight savings also brought the rain and early morning power outages.
Last week had many highlights. As there was no Homework List due to the new quarter, students with organized backpacks and binders and those PE students who are well on their way to the 40 and 80 mile club were dismissed early for lunch. We are working hard to help students organize their materials daily. You might want to have a "binder check" at home too, with the goal being no loose papers in the backpack. Robin Sawaske, Associate Superintendent, visited classrooms on Wednesday morning. On Thursday afternoon, Fight Crims: Invest in Kids sponsored a visit to the La Cumbre ASES After School Program, attended by many dignitaries, including Assemblyman Das Williams, District Attorney Joyce Dudley, Sheriff Bill Brown and several others. The advisory group saw how participation in after school programs keeps kids engaged and away from crime. The group was excited to see a successful junior high after school program (one of the few in the state) and the variety of education and enrichment activities offered. There are currently 230 students enrolled in the program, 40% of our student population.
The Friday Jog-a-Thon was canceled on Friday morning due to predictions of thunder and rain. After some early showers, the rain never appeared, but it was very cold. The Jog-a-Thon will now be held on Thursday, November 10th during PE classes. We welcome volunteers to mark laps. If you can spare 1 hour or more, please call Judy Hartmann, PE Chairperson. Thanks.
80 students and families went to the UCLA vs. Arizona State football game on Saturday. ASU, ranked 19th in the country, was the clear favorite.......but UCLA won in a nail-biter as ASU missed a field goal kick with 4 seconds remaining for a UCLA big win 29-28. The game was also televised, so I hope many of you saw the excitement via television. Before the game, students were given information about college, cheered with the UCLA cheerleaders, and got a taste of the "college experience". A special thanks to Mr. Alvarez, Ms. Filipko, Ms. Caiazza, and Ms. Gordon, faculty chaperones.
Reminder - Please sign up for a poinsettia plant. Order forms were sent home with students, or you can call the school to place your order.
Instruments for Kids Benefit Concert - mark your calendars - Friday, November 18th at the Creekside (Modoc & Hollister) from 6 p.m. - 1:30. $10 admission, and 50% of the money will be used to purchase new instruments at La Cumbre. BIG PARTY - December 9th from 5 - 9 at Earl Warren Showgrounds. The La Cumbre PTA is sponsoring Winder Kermes (carnival) in Warren Hall. Food, games, bands, dancing, fun for the entire family.
