Weekly Update #9

October 9, 2011

Hi La Cumbre Comminity,

We mourn the passing of Sergio Romero, La Cumbre grad, and 10th grader at San Marcos High School. Sergio was hit by a car while crossing in the crosswalk on Milpas Street. We remember Sergio as a good student and kind person. Our condolences to his family and friends.

Over the past week, we experienced our first rainy day lunch of the year, where students are allowed to eat and socialize on the first floor main hallway. It's always difficult to "contain" students who would rather be outside in the fresh air walking around, but we survived. On rainy days, the Snack Shack serves out of the cafeteria. We also had to cancel the International Walk to School Day on Thursday, and it has been rescheduled for this coming Thursday at 7:30. La Cumbre participates in a creative Walk and Roll Challenge, and every Wednesday, homeroom teachers tally the number of students who have walked, biked, carpooled, or come by bus. The homeroom with the highest percentage of students at the end of each semester receives a field trip to Zodo's as a reward. We ended out the week on Friday with a shuffling contest during the lunch period.

Just a reminder that breakfast is free to ALL La Cumbre students. Zero period students receive breakfast in class, and the cafeteria is open to all students at 7:50. Attached is the yummy breakfast menu.

  • This Wednesday evening, guest speaker Rick Clemens will be in the La Cumbre Theater from 6:30 - 8 p.m. to discuss how to maximize every student's time and learning in the general education classrooms and delivering special education services in various school environments. The talk is sponsored by the district's Special Education Department. We are also please to have parent Marcia Eichelberger as our representative to the Special Education Parent Advisory Committee. Marcia will be available to meet you starting at 6 p.m., and she will also hold a meeting in November to provide guidance and support for parents.
