Weekly Update #1

August 7, 2011

Hi La Cumbre Comminity,

Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year at La Cumbre Junior High. We welcome parents of incoming 7th graders, and we welcome back our returning 8th graders. Email updates will be sent our weekly, detailing the past week's events, upcoming events, and general announcements. We invite our parents of La Cumbre graduates to stay connected to La Cumbre through these updates, as we will include high school students in many of our events. If you would like to be removed from the database, please let me know.

Packet pick-up began on August 1st. Inside the packet is required information from the district as well as announcements from the school regarding supplies needed, Picture Day, Back to School Nite, After School Program, etc. We also mailed out a letter to all parents outlining what forms must be returned at Registration Day on Monday, August 22, 2011. If you did not receive the letter, please call the school to double check that we have your correct address on file. You can also find information at our website: http://www.sbceo.org/~lacumbre. Class schedules will be provided upon completion of registration documents (no schedules are given out before August 22). There will also be representatives from the PTA to assist you, and PE uniforms, math notebooks, and yearbooks will be on sale.

I am pleased to announce that almost all of our incoming 7th graders have received the TDAP vaccination and provided proof to the school. 8th grade parents - Please, please, bring in proof BEFORE Registration Day. We will have 2 lines, an Express Line for those who have turned in Address Verification and TDAP Verification, and a very slow line for those who turn in the proofs on August 22, as we have to stop and make copies of your documents. Our office is open daily from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m., and we are hoping you will come in soon and provide your proofs. More information is available at http://www.sbsdk12.org/tdap/index.shtml and http://www.sbsdk12.org/schools/addressverification/index.shtml.

We have been working hard this summer to prepare for the coming year. We have several staff changes and additions to the staff as follows:

  • Core - Cathy Borden and Gayle Labrana (both from Adams), and Kaycie Gordon (from SBJHS)
  • Special Ed - Lauren Sartore and Jody Stevens (from Home Hospital)
  • Music - Nancy Mathison (from Elementary Music)

The rest of the outstanding staff is returning for another year of "work hard - play hard" at La Cumbre. Most of our staff attended professional development during the summer to refresh and learn new and exciting strategies to use with your student.

Yes, school begins on Thursday, August 25th. During the first few days of school, we will be teaching students the skills needed to be successful, along with the La Cumbre expectations. We know that 7th graders are excited and nervous about moving to the junior high school level, and our focus during the first few days is to get them acquainted with the school, junior high norms, and meeting new classmates. We also devote an entire day to teaching the 6 pillars of Character Counts!, which we practice daily. Students will also participate in activities related to tolerance of all and anti-bullying. We believe that it is important to set the tone and clearly communicate our expectations. I will be meeting with each grade level on the second day of school to review rules, answer questions, and excite students about the coming year.

ASES, our free after school program, begins on Thursday, August 25th, with activities starting on Monday, August 29th. Enrollment forms are in the main office and will be available at Registration. Students must attend at least 3 days per week.

Please feel free to call us during the year if you have any questions. Mike Alvarez, Asst. Principal, and Rosemary Cordero, Head Counselor, and I are here to help you and your student. You can also email teachers by using their first initial and last name@sbsdk12.org.
