Welcome to La Cumbre Junior High School!
It’s my pleasure to welcome you to La Cumbre Junior High School. We are located on 23 acres, in an historic building that was constructed in 1927, and we are rich with tradition, both current and historic. La Cumbre is not a “junior version” of high school. We are a small, personalized school of approximately 500 students, where all are nurtured in academics, performing and fine arts, technology, and elective courses.
At La Cumbre, we are proud of our high test scores and were pleased to receive the highest possible similar schools score of 10 from the State of California in 2009. All students attend Core Language Arts/Social Studies classes with the same teacher as their home base for 2-3 periods daily. Core strands include GATE, Honors, College Prep, and Core Knowledge Honors & GATE. Students also attend appropriate math classes in Pre-Algebra, Algebra, and Geometry, and experience hands-on science in our 3 science labs. Students are treated to a variety of elective choices in languages, art, music, computer applications, and industrial technology. Our newest offering is video game design and construction. Numerous field trips supplement the classroom experience, including trips to SBCC, UCSB, Westmont, UCLA, Museum of Tolerance, Washington, D.C & New York, and Europe, just to name a few.
Every person on staff takes time to interact and connect with students, whether in the office, the classroom, on the playing fields, or in the cafeteria. We offer a safe and secure environment, where every student is a star. We regularly recognize students in all areas of excellence, through assembly and award programs.
At La Cumbre, we work hard and play hard, and there are many fun activities for students. We regularly hold lunch games, homeroom competitions, assemblies, and after school dances. Our after school program runs daily from 3:30 – 6 p.m. and is free for all students. Activities include academic tutorial, Japanese, cooking, theater arts, sports, weight training, science club, bike club, chess club, and rock band. Students select the activities and may change them as desired.
La Cumbre welcomes parent participation in the classroom, through the PTA, or at specialized parent nights. We also enjoy partnerships with United Way, SBCC, UCSB, and other community organizations.
Welcome to La Cumbre Junior High School, and we look forward to communication with you, either in person or by email.
Thank you.
